FIDELIO

Beethoven's only opera

The production is set in period and presented as a play within a play, performed by the traditional commedia dell'arte characters. With audiences of all types in mind, it can be adapted to almost any space and as such is available with piano accompaniment only, piano quintet, reduced or full orchestra.

"Fidelio, Beethoven's only opera, is a searing tale of love, couple with the triumph of freedom over oppression.”

"Beethoven struggled for eight years to produce his only opera, Fidelio. It was performed before the crowned heads of Europe at the Congress of Vienna in 1814, and has remained in the repertoire ever since. Its story of how true love will always triumph, coupled with the inevitable defeat of political oppression, is as relevant today as when Beethoven composed it two centuries ago."

John Suchet
Author and authority on the life and music of Ludwig van Beethoven
