TOSCA
the powerful & intensely passionate love story...
This new production by soprano and
director Anna Gregory contrasts the
romantic passion of the lovers, Mario
Cavaradossi and Floria Tosca, with the unrequited, violent lust of the powerful Chief of Police, Baron Scarpia. Its
timeless themes of love, political
repression and corruption all lead to one end – the deaths of all three main
protagonists.

After her lover, the artist Mario, is arrested for helping an escaped political prisoner, opera singer Tosca agrees to meet Scarpia in his private chambers to secure his release. Scarpia demands the ultimate ransom – her favours in return for a pardon. She agrees but, while he is signing a travel document, she sees a dagger on the table and at the last minute, kills her attacker.
Unbeknowns to Tosca, Scarpia never
intended freeing her lover and when she persuades Mario to go through with a supposedly fake execution on the roof of the gaol, she never expects the bullets to be real. Mario falls down, mortally wounded and, as the guards race to the scene to arrest her for Scarpia’s murder, she leaps to her death from the battlements.
